Upcoming Opportunities to Meet and Hear Percy

Please listen on for Percy's campaign spots on the radio, AM 1580.

The race Is Nearly Run
League forum kicks off last leg of political campaigns

Reprinted from the Englewood Sun, 10/24/2008
MURDOCK -- About 60 people -- one-third of them members of the International Association of Fire Fighters Local 2546 -- attended the first of two candidate forums sponsored by the Charlotte County League of Women Voters in the County Administrative Center.

Candidates for property appraiser, airport board, and three county commission seats participated in the first forum.  Candidates for sheriff and District 71 and 72 state representative seats took part in the second.

Englewood Sun Endorses Percy
For the first time in recent memory, the local newspapers have endorsed a Democrat!  With your continued support, we will win the election.  Please read the endorsement reprinted below.

Angelo for Commission District 3 seat
If we set out to find an outstanding county commission candidate at a time when Charlotte County faces myriad difficult problems, we'd begin by looking for a problem-solver.   We'd want a smart, thoughtful person who demonstrated an ability to analyze problems in a fresh way, someone who is articulate and can communicate with other commissioners, staff and the public.   We'd want someone with experience, someone who showed a willingness to do the homework and the legwork needed to grasp the underlying nature of problems and work with others to hammer out a reasonable solution. Percy helps Manasota Key residents resist the County's changes to their overlay district

Reprinted from the Englewood Sun, 9/18/2008
Eager to hold on to a unique island ambience, residents and members of an advisory committee tried to clean up the local zoning ordinance.  In its place, they crafted one that would free the area of noisy construction pile driving, among other things.  But what began as an effort to reorganize existing codes has turned into a substantially changed ordinance that goes against the will of the people, members of the Manasota and Sandpiper Key Advisory Committee agreed Wednesday.

Commission candidates split on phosphate pact
Pending Mosaic deal draws fire, support during Rotonda forum

Reprinted from the Englewood Sun, 10/8/2008
ROTONDA WEST -- Three Charlotte County commission candidates say signing a pact with Mosaic that limits local governments' role in ensuring enforcement of phosphate mining regulations is folly.  Two others maintain that the pending agreement offers environmental protections the county couldn't secure while spending $12 million in legal battles with the corporate giant.  (read full article)

West County showdown
Skidmore v. Angelo: Hometown boy takes on attorney with flair for compromise

Reprinted from the Englewood Sun, 9/19/2008
It would be challenging to find two more different candidates for Charlotte County Commission than District 3 hopefuls Percy Angelo and Robert Skidmore.

Republican Skidmore, 26, won the Aug. 26 GOP District 3 primary by capturing 46 percent of ballots cast -- 8,769 votes -- to handily defeat incumbent Tom Moore and longtime area builder Richard Sinclair.

Democrat Angelo, 63, was unopposed in the primary, but raised more money in campaign contributions than any local commission hopeful, $50,609, and is poised to be a rarity -- a viable Democratic candidate in a local election.

But it would be a mistake to view this race strictly on party lines.

Text of Percy's Address to the Town Hall Forum, August 23, 2008

"We’re all aware of the serious economic mistakes our Commission has made. I’m not going to dwell on those today. $16,700. What I do want to talk about is what we can do now to build a better and more diversified future for Charlotte County. I’ve prepared a Blueprint document which discusses this in some detail. In my time today I want to explore a couple of ideas from that Blueprint. I have some copies with me and I’ll put it on my website, www.electpercy.com."

Percy was invited to join in the Coral Creek Bridge construction Monday morning, September 28, by Commissioner D'Aprile.  (That's Percy in the pink shirt - click on the picture for a full-size photo.)

She really can use a shovel, a useful political skill!

Percy Heads Effort to Forge Agreement on Planned Development Ordinance

In June, Percy led a group of usually combative groups to forge an agreement on Planned Development.  In exchange for allowing a limited number of 5-story buildings. the builders will have to provide significantly increased additional outdoor open space, will have to meet setback requirements, and in certain areas, will have to meet with all the neighbors within 1,000 feet of the proposed development, and will have two years to commence the project, unlike the proposed 4 or 5 year period, and much more.  This is another example of the intelligent change and inclusive leadership that Percy will provide and was covered extensively by the Englewood Sun and the Boca Beacon.  You may read the full text of those newspaper articles by clicking on the links below.

Emergency Workers Endorse Percy

Firefighters and Paramedics for Public Safety, (Suncoast Professional Firefighters and Paramedics, Local 2546) officially endorsed Percy in the District 3 Commission race as the candidate who best represents their organization.  Knowing the everyday importance of their work and the courage shown by our fire fighters and paramedics, Percy is truly honored to have received their important endorsement.

On July 14th, Percy rallied with her supporters from the Suncoast Professional Firefighters and Paramedics, Local 2546, at the Democratic Candidate Rollout in Punta Gorda.

Sierra Club Endorses Percy

Percy has been endorsed by the Sierra Club's Greater Charlotte Harbor chapter.  This endorsement, combined with her previous endorsement by IAFF 2546 - Suncoast Professional Fire Fighters and Paramedics, demonstrates Percy's broad appeal and her ability to work successfully with widely different groups.

It's Time to Rethink the Phosphate Pact
By Percy Angelo

Apparently, the Mosaic phosphate pact is coming back to the County Commission despite the refusal of either Sarasota or Lee county to approve it.

Things have changed since Charlotte first reviewed the matter, however, and there are good reasons not to enter a separate agreement with Mosaic, even if the commissioners thought the original agreement was a good idea.  (read full article)

Developers, engineers backing Moore's campaign
Contributions show interests, some candidates say

Developers and engineers dominate the list of contributors to the re-election campaign of incumbent District 3 Charlotte County Commissioner Tom Moore, a retired engineering equipment salesmen.

A couple of local environmental advocates and a half-dozen attorneys have contributed to challenger Percy Angelo, an environmental attorney who worked in a large Chicago firm until she retired.  (read full article)

Island Residents Responsible for Political Mailing
Boca Grande residents who recently received fliers in the mail from a group called “3ch” might be wondering what type of organization it is that is asking for campaign contributions for two candidates running for the Charlotte County Commission. (read full article)

Petitions Filed to Qualify for the Ballot
The Supervisor of Elections notified us on April 7, 2008 that we had filed sufficient signatures to qualify for the ballot.  We needed 1173 signed petitions and filed 1327, well in excess of the required number. All signatures were obtained in just 5 ½ weeks by our fantastic group of volunteers, like the folks pictured above collecting signatures at the Placida Seafood Festival.  Ours was the first campaign for a candidate for the Commission to obtain its signatures, well before the May 19, 2008 deadline.
